Playing With Purpose: Altering Wooden Games and Dolls

As Cindy showed us last week with her funky new keyholder and Ann showed two weeks ago with her pull toy turned salsa dish, with a little bit of effort, a tiny bit of cash, and a whole lot of winging it, you can turn simple toys into something unexpectedly awesome and useful.   As you saw on WIP Wednesday, I bought some cheapo wooden peg games and little fairy dolls at the dollar store, and today I spent the afternoon turning them into wall hangings that can be used to display your favorite art or photos.

Playing with Purpose: Altering a Pull Toy

Over Christmas, while I was in Michael’s, I saw this “Wooden Pull Toy” (it’s actually MDF, of course), and after exactly three seconds of deliberation, I bought it.  I’m not sure why.  I don’t have a thing for turtles.  I don’t have a thing for MDF.  I don’t even have a small child who needs something to pull.  Whatever my reason, I’m glad I bought it, because for the month of February, we’ll be altering toys and giving them grown-up things to do – like hold salsa for a party or beads for your latest project!

Needle Felting To Go: Variation #3 on DIY Marker Storage

When Ann came up with her fabulous idea for portable marker storage out of a photo album, I was excited by the possibilities.  Then I was paralyzed by the possibilities and couldn’t decide what to-go project I couldn’t live without.  I needed a photo album full of acrylic paints.  I needed to bring all 90571095710 of my Prismacolor pencils to the dentist.  I wanted to glue the lids of Twinkling H2O pots and take those with me even though I only use them about every 32nd fortnight.  I was driving myself crazy with indecision. Grim Reaper Mirror: Variation #2 on Sarah’s Bone Cathedral Chalkboard

Two weeks ago, Sarah floored us with a jaw-droppingly remarkable bone cathedral chalkboard made from a frame and skeleton garland. The rest of you were, no doubt, awed and inspired. Me too. Then Ann rolls in with a corkboard and the awe and inspiration grew to gargantuan proportions, similar to their talents.

Inspired by their awesomeness (and also required by Wonderstrange Law)  I dug around for a frame, some garlands, and an idea. I finally settled on trying out a product I have looked at several times with interest but never actually used, Krylon Looking Glass . This is a spray paint that can be applied to an ordinary piece of glass (like in a picture frame)  to transform it in to a mirror.

Day of the Dead Inspired Bulletin Board (Variation #1 on Sarah’s Bone Cathedral Inspired Chalkboard)

As you may know, we’ve started a new practice at wonderstrange:  On the first Friday of the month, one of us introduces a brand new project, and for the next three Fridays, the rest of us put our own spin on the idea.  On October 7, Sarah kicked things off with her insanely cool Bone Cathedral Inspired Chalkboard, which at heart was a project with three components: 1) a picture frame; 2) a garland of plastic skeletons from the dollar store; and 3) extreme awesomeness.  After some consideration, I settled on this variation: Instead of a chalkboard, I would make a cool cork board with a two-headed skellie centerpiece.  As for the extreme awesomeness, I just had to cross my fingers and hope for the best.
