Playing With Purpose: Altering Wooden Games and Dolls

As Cindy showed us last week with her funky new keyholder and Ann showed two weeks ago with her pull toy turned salsa dish, with a little bit of effort, a tiny bit of cash, and a whole lot of winging it, you can turn simple toys into something unexpectedly awesome and useful.   As you saw on WIP Wednesday, I bought some cheapo wooden peg games and little fairy dolls at the dollar store, and today I spent the afternoon turning them into wall hangings that can be used to display your favorite art or photos.

Needle Felting To Go: Variation #3 on DIY Marker Storage

When Ann came up with her fabulous idea for portable marker storage out of a photo album, I was excited by the possibilities.  Then I was paralyzed by the possibilities and couldn’t decide what to-go project I couldn’t live without.  I needed a photo album full of acrylic paints.  I needed to bring all 90571095710 of my Prismacolor pencils to the dentist.  I wanted to glue the lids of Twinkling H2O pots and take those with me even though I only use them about every 32nd fortnight.  I was driving myself crazy with indecision. Grim Reaper Mirror: Variation #2 on Sarah’s Bone Cathedral Chalkboard

Two weeks ago, Sarah floored us with a jaw-droppingly remarkable bone cathedral chalkboard made from a frame and skeleton garland. The rest of you were, no doubt, awed and inspired. Me too. Then Ann rolls in with a corkboard and the awe and inspiration grew to gargantuan proportions, similar to their talents.

Inspired by their awesomeness (and also required by Wonderstrange Law)  I dug around for a frame, some garlands, and an idea. I finally settled on trying out a product I have looked at several times with interest but never actually used, Krylon Looking Glass . This is a spray paint that can be applied to an ordinary piece of glass (like in a picture frame)  to transform it in to a mirror.
