For Christmas last year, my sister-in-law got me Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities: My Notebooks, Collections, and Other Obsessions. I don’t know exactly how she knew to do this. It’s not as if we had ever discussed my love for Guillermo del Toro. She struck gold, though, because this book is cooler than cool (ice cold!). Let me show you!
If you don’t know who Guillermo del Toro is, by the way, that’s perfectly okay. What you need to know about him is as follows: 1) He directs movies; 2) he keeps notebooks; and 3) he’s a serious freak. Serious freaks are my favorite.
Let’s start with boyfriend’s notebooks. Neil Gaiman was so entranced by boyfriend’s notebooks that he doesn’t remember leaving boyfriend’s house – or with whom.
Boyfriend uses the notebooks to sketch many of the monsters that populate his films, and you know, just generally to be awesome.
Clearly, the inside of boyfriend’s head is an amazing place – but so, too, the inside of his house! Look at his stairwell!
If I were even a tiny bit cooler, I would immediately start keeping notebooks. IMMEDIATELY. Notebooks.
Until then, I will just continue to be incredibly inspired by this book. Anyone want to come over and draw some monsters?
