This year, I am (first of all) designing several things with Christmas in mind EVEN THOUGH IT IS SUMMER. I am shouting that to increase my resolve. Summer is the time when retailers are supposed to think about Christmas, and since I have a store that only I can fill with goodies, I have to train myself to do the same, as odd as it may feel. And sound. And be.
I am (second of all) still obsessed with movie director and all-around smartypants Guillermo del Toro. He is kind of my “thing” for 2014. In his honor, here are three ornaments from Hellboy, the del Toro way, instead of the Mignola way – with apologies to any diehard Mignola purists. Actually, I’m not sure I know any diehard Mignola purists, which I think is a testimony to the excellent work del Toro did on the films. (Mike Mignola is the artist who created Hellboy back in the early 90s. Del Toro directed *Blade 2* just to be able to direct *Hellboy* as a movie.)
Without further ado, in a cherry tree rather than a Christmas tree, here are my prototypes for Hellboy, Abe Sapien, and Liz Sherman.
These need to be tested, and then I’ll have both the patterns and the characters themselves in the shop!
