Call me extra dorky, but I love bringing together characters from different sci-fi franchises and universes.  When we drafted our list of 100 Things to Draw When You’re Bored for 2014, I made sure to include Sci-Fi Mashups (#50) so I could smoosh it around like so:  Yoda (from Star Wars) is lifting Morpheus (from The Matrix) in front of the Stargate (from Stargate).  Mr. Spock (from Star Trek) was simply observing, until a chestburster (from Alien) popped out.  Given time, I think it will probably sing the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Sci Fi Mash UpIt’s highly illogical, but it sure is fun!

Speaking of fun, I am really excited to be co-teaching a new mixed media workshop with Sal Scheibe, who is one of my artistic idols.  This is not a class that requires you to buy all the latest trends in gadgets and toys – although you are certainly welcome to use your favorite gadgets on class projects!  Rather than trends, Sal and I focus on teaching good design.  This is a class that will make you a better artist, because we want to help you dazzle yourself.  That way, when you do save up for the latest gadget or spray or solvent, you will know you’re going to put it to great use!

Next up this week is #95: These things all start with B.  I will tell you from the get-go that there are 14 things depicted below that start with B.  The first person to find all 14 might very well win a prize!

Awesome! Love the Mashup so, so much! Poor Spock though…and Morpheous is just chill while this is happening and getting lifted by Yoda who’s just raising an eyebrow at the brithing process of an alien spawn. XD Love it!

Curious though on the 14 “things”…are they actually things -living or not, or can they be expressions as well?

Yay! I'm so happy you like the mashup!

The 14 things are all things. A couple of them are verrrrry subtle, though – you know, just to make things obnoxiously difficult. 😉

My mind continued to wander a little too far with the mashup. Let’s just say that River, Spock, the alien baby he just birthed and GIR got involved in a “happy famly” moment while riding a tauntaun….I may have to draw that later…Way to get my mind going! 😉

…I digress. Onto my stab at the 14 things:

bat, binky, boy, bra, buckles (on said bra), bagel/bauble/band, baby, beret, (buck-toothed) beaver, (botany) book, bottle, bracelet/bling, boat-necked shirt, bags (under the eyes).

Others I found were: the baffled/befuddled expression on the guy (who appears to me to be a baker by the hat), blase’/bored expression on the (babushka?-clad) Beaver, and the handleBar moustache.

      …and somehow I feel as though I’m missing something…but I love a good challenge!

Wooo! You got there! The guy is in fact a baker, and the beaver is sporting a balaclava. Go you!

Woot! Thanks for the awesome-tastic visual challenge! 😀

I believe you get a prize, by the way! I have cabinet cards or vintage plastic dolls (no Barbies, alas). Send your preference – and your address – to ann@wonderstrange.com

            😀 *Confetti* 😀

I love the idea of the expressions… especially since he looks bothered, the beaver looks bored, and the baby looks baffled. 😀

Bwahahaha! You're right! I love it!

I lost my comment! Funny enough, that comment only discussed the Bs, because I thought it was its own post. I don't know why I thought that, except I probably didn't click on it, and tried to read it from the main page. Which usually works. Unless you are me. 😀

I love the sci-fi mash-up! It is hilarious and very well done. And so nicely designed – so people should totally sign up for your mixed media class! I don't have time for mixed media, particularly since I so recently added acrylics to the roster. But I hope you'll post updates about it here!

The B's is hilarious and very well done. Oh! I remember what I said in the other comment. For a moment I thought the beaver was an ewok! But it is clearly a beaver with those teeth and that tail. (I suppose he could be wearing a Bonnet! It all makes sense now!)

I had figured out 11 things, however I didn't call the shirt a boat-necked shirt, I just thought it was a blouse. I was going to give the whole thing more thought, but then I saw some of the answers. Couldn't figure out what the thing was on the beaver's head, would never have gotten that unless I'd Googled different kinds of hat (I guess). I may or may not have gotten the baker or the buckles. Who knows, but thanks for the challenge!!
